Terror Attacks: A nuanced Approach to Documentary Making

How do you approach documentary making that involves a terror attack? Are there any extra considerations as producers we need to be mindful of? We hear first hand from the father of a victim of a terrorist attack along with a former Detective and family liaison officer deployed within the Counter Terrorism Unit S015. They – a long with a multi-award winning producer and director of documentaries in this space, will share their experiences of working with the media and learning we can all use going forward.

This discussion will include:

  • Good practices when dealing with victims and families of terror attacks.
  • How Duty of Care can be more nuanced with those involved in terror attacks
  • Things to avoid when dealing with victims and families
  • Pitfalls that documentary makers have fallen into befare.
  • Approaching the scale of an attack and being mindful of all the victims and professionals.

Gary’s son, James, was murdered in a terrorist attack in Forbury Gardens, Reading in June 2020. He was stabbed, along with David Wails and Joe Ritchie-Bennett, in a random act of violence by Khairi Saadallah.
