Felicity and Sean will look at the legal and regulatory issues that arise when making a true crime programme. The session will provide a breakdown of the key Ofcom protocols, including harm and offence, duty of care, under 18s, accuracy, and notice, and a brief overview of the laws of defamation, privacy and contempt of court. Taking a practical approach, with case studies to illustrate, we aim for the session to demonstrate that legal and compliance considerations should not be an obstacle to programme making, but a helpful guide that can improve storytelling, and provide better protections to contributors and production.
As well as a short talk, the session will feature slides, and an opportunity for questions and answers.
